COVID-19 Scams: How to Avoid Them

Dec 4, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to tear through Bristol County and so to do the scammers. The most frequent way a scammer might try to steal your identity or money is via a phone call or text.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • DO NOT share your social security number or financial information.  A contact tracer or the government will never ask for this information.
  • DO NOT click links or download things from “contact tracers” via text or email.  Contact tracers will not send you information to download.
  • The government will not call or text you about taxes, stimulus checks, or money owed.  If the IRS or another government department needs to communicate with you, they will do so via mail.

Scammers and robocallers are savvy.  For more information, including videos, examples, and what to do if you think you have been scammed, please go to: https://www.ftc.gov/coronavirus/resources
